Amity University boys kidnapped, four held with ransom money

The Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force arrested four persons on Thursday on the charge of kidnapping two students of Amity University on Tuesday. The students were returned to their families after they paid a ransom of Rs 85 lakh, of which Rs 80 lakh has been recovered.

The four accused have been identified as Yashbir Singh, Somvir Singh, Vivek Tyagi and Sohil Sisodia. Senior officers said Yashvir Singh is a physical instructor at a Meerut academy, Somvir Singh a state-level athlete and Tyagi an employee of an MNC in Rajasthan.

Arun Kumar, ADG, Law and Order (Lucknow), said: "Around 5.30 pm, BBA students Kunal and Sahir were coming out of the university in their Mercedes C-Class. Four persons in a Mahindra Xylo, two of whom were in police uniforms, stopped them on the pretext of checking documents and abducted them. A case of kidnapping was registered."

Police said the ransom was paid on Wednesday morning. "The accused took the boys to a room in Meerut and made the ransom call on Tuesday night. By 2 am on Wednesday, the men had collected a ransom of Rs 50 lakh from Kunal's parents in Ghaziabad, and Rs 35 lakh from Sahir's family. Both students were returned to their families as soon as the handover of money took place. Later, based on a tip-off, we arrested the four when they came to Surajpur to divide the money," a police officer said.

"During questioning, the accused revealed that they used to kidnap college students who travelled in high-end luxury cars and collected the ransom money from the families concerned within 10 to 12 hours. They reached Amity University on Tuesday afternoon and began scouting for potential targets. Two of them posed as policemen and were carrying a gun. They forced the two boys into the Xylo and drove them to Jaybhimnagar in Meerut," the officer said.
